PLEXOS Database Update

The overall objective of the project was to update AEMO ESOO PLEXOS database with the additional information on generating facilities and prepare database for price forecasting studies. The updated database was first verified by conducting the back casting against realized operation and achieved market prices. Based on the historical operation and generation bidding, bidding profiles were prepared for all generators including additional outage information to be used for forecasting studies.

Scope of the project included modelling Abu Dhabi power system in PLEXOS software with focus on optimizing facilities with integrated production of electricity and water, using existing generation fleet of CCGT plants, new PV plants, and nuclear generation. The 6-year period under analysis included various scenarios related to electricity demand, large consumers, commissioning of the nuclear power plant units and fuel prices. The goal of the PLEXOS simulations was to find optimum dispatch of power and water under different development scenarios. After obtaining results from PLEXOS, transmission system analysis was performed in PSS/e software.

Co-optimization of electrical and gas supply/transport agreements in PLEXOS

We performed the preparation of PLEXOS database by modelling electrical and gas system with the relevant inputs for electricity generation and transmission network, and relevant inputs for the gas network and gas inlet/outlet points with respective gas supply and transport agreements. Templates for data input for the purpose of yearly, monthly, and day-to-day gas nominations with relevant outputs for the gas quantities in terms of gas supply nominations, gas pipeline balance, gas storage utilization and gas transport charges were prepared. Input data was automated with the developed Python code.

PV interconnection studies and BESS optimization

The primary objective of this assignment was to undertake a utility battery study for ground-mounted solar PV installations at five (5) proposed sites for the GPL National 35MW Solar PV plus17.5MWh Battery Storage Project. Stability of the grid required reliable and relevant data about the technical limitations of the transmission and distribution (T&D) system prior to interconnection of large intermittent renewable energy projects. This battery storage analysis and separately planned interconnection study provided detailed information about any limitations and mitigation actions including the use of battery storage as an alternative to T&D infrastructure upgrades.

The objective of our project was to update the existing PLEXOS model to accurately represent fuel consumption of the actual system. Further work included developing methodology and carrying out analysis for evaluating commercial effects of different initiatives in Abu Dhabi Power system (e.g., to determine impact of import/exports with neighbouring countries, introduction of battery energy storage system, additional gas tranches, etc.).

Our main task was updating WEM database with the more detailed information on generating facilities and prepare database for various types of studies required by ERAWA: reserve cost allocation, system adequacy, outage planning… Based on revised database, we conducted back casting against realized operation and achieved prices and fine-tuned the database.

Technical, Economic and Social Feasibility Study for the HVDC Interconnection

Our scope included HVDC technology review & project cost estimation, exploring funding options, providing implementation schedule, policy and regulatory barriers and performing market and cost-benefit analysis followed by grid calculations, mindful of the risk and social and economic impact of the investment. New international HVDC link between Salgareda (Italy) and Divaca/Bericevo (Slovenia) is expected to increase cross-border transmission capacity, power exchange flexibility, reliability, and safety of the electric power supply in both countries, allow integration of additional renewable energy sources and, finally, strengthen the regional electricity market.

Performing grid analysis and verification of electrical equipment compatibility in this project, began with load flow calculations for full determination of the voltage profile of the adjacent grid area, reactive power and transformer control requirements and decision on equipment ratings in the event of outages and faults. In addition, we performed static and transient short circuit calculations, system impact and transformer in-rush study, transient simulations for determination of the critical fault clearing times, harmonic analysis, relay setting study and small signal stability studies.

System Impact and Integration Study for Combined Cycle Power Plant

Sarawak Energy Berhad is currently in the process of installation of two new Combined Cycle Gas Turbines (CCGT) in the location of the existing thermal power plant Bintulu Tanjung Kidurong. Therefore, in accordance with Sarawak Grid Code a testing of the block was performed to confirm the compliance with the Code as well as the dynamic model validation of the blocks. Our goal here was to carry out dynamic model validation of the plant in PSSE software, which is essential for accurate modelling of the entire SEB system and future plaining of the system. Dynamic model validation was based on the testing of the power plant carried out by GE based on model validation test procedure. The individual dynamic model was developed for both GT and ST units using PSSE power system software, also used by SEB to carry out all system planning and simulation analysis.

5-year Renewable Energy Plan for Bahamas with 20-year Integrated Resource Plan (IRP)

Our responsibilities included producing a 5-year renewable energy plan for the Bahamas (New Providence and Family Islands) using PLEXOS and ETAP software. The plan was developed to determine a short-term plan (and associated costs) to achieve the 2030 National Energy Plan Goal and to create technical guidelines for interconnections with different sizes of renewable energy systems for different islands and development of interconnection agreements. Additionally, we developed the Grid Code for BPL, considering the envisaged penetration of renewable generation in the Bahamas. After execution of power system studies, to identify grid and generation improvement recommendations for the proposed 5-year plan and the development of 20-year Integrated Resource Plan for Bahamas, we held 2 weeks of workshops in BPL’s offices.
